“Björk is…seeding an artistic and technological shift from the ground up.”—Q
Today Björk’s “Mutual Core” music video won the prestigious People’s Voice Webby Award in the Online Film & Video: Music category. This year’s win follows Björk’s 2012 award for Artist of the Year. Directed by Los Angeles-based director Andrew Thomas Huang, the “Mutual Core” video premiered on MOCAtv last year and also screened on electronic billboards throughout Times Square every night in March as part of the “Midnight Moment” series. The video was named one of the Best Music Videos of the Year by Huffington Post, Slant, and i09. Additional accolades for the “Mutual Core” music video:
“Perfectly bizarre and visually stimulating”
The Atlantic
“[The video] represents a new level of quality and ingenuity from Huang, who seems to be building on his now established visual style.”
“Beguilingly strange”
“The video brings the song to explosive life.”
This spring and summer Björk will bring her immersive Biophilia live show back to North America for a limited time before continuing to tour the world. The North American dates include three shows in San Francisco and three at the Hollywood Palladium for which the venues will be arranged to the original Biophilia specifications as fully realized audio-visual experiences in an intimate, in-the-round setting.
The Biophilia shows feature:
• Unique, one-of-a-kind instruments
including four ten-foot pendulum harps,
twin musical Tesla coils

and a MIDI-controlled pipe organ
• A 21-piece Icelandic female choir
• Narration by David Attenborough
• Projections from the Biophilia apps
SPIN declared the Biophilia show to be “less like watching a concert and more like going to Bowie’s EPCOT” and NPR called the show “a lesson in the scientific art of music, and how limitless it can be.” The San Francisco shows will take place at the Craneway Pavillion, located on the Richmond Waterfront and easily accessible by BART as well as by a private ferry that picks up in many San Francisco locations.
Björk’s Biophilia Education Program, a series of interactive workshops designed to teach students about the relationships between music, science and technology, has been held in Manchester, Reykjavík, Oslo, Buenos Aires, New York and Paris and is now coming to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Björk’s San Francisco concerts, running Wednesday May 22 through Thursday May 28, are in collaboration with the Exploratorium, the world’s foremost hands-on museum of science, art and human phenomena, now located at Pier 15 along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Using the Biophilia App Suite as a focal point, Exploratorium scientists and educators will align a project to each of the 10 songs included, creating a workshop series that engages students both in music and science with creativity, exploration and discovery. Björk will also be collaborating with MOCA to bring the workshops to students in Los Angeles in June.
In addition to her Biophilia performances, Björk will also appear at the Hollywood Bowl on June 2 and at Echo Beach in Toronto on July 16 along with three festival appearances: headlining the eighth annual Pitchfork Festival on July 19, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival on June 15 and the RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa on July 13. Check out the new single along with all of Tricky's upcoming US appearances below.

Tricky is back. Back with a new studio album, False Idols, and his own label (also bearing the False Idols name), but also back in a personal sense. "I was lost for ages," he says. "I was trying to prove something to people, trying to do something to please other people and also myself at the same time, which is never going to work. To be honest with you, I've been floating around since Chris Blackwell and Island. My last two albums, I thought they were good, but I realize now they weren't. This album is about me finding myself again."

Adrian Thaws is, perhaps, being a bit hard on himself. However, there is no doubt that False Idols stands as his most accomplished album since his earliest works. It opens with a cover of a Patti Smith song, "Somebody's Sins," which sees Tricky and vocalist Fran Belmonte whispering "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" over a sparse groaning bass. The lead single "Parenthesis," which features a vocals from Peter Silberman of The Antlers, has more rhythmic grunt, which gives a different dimension to the dark gothic atmosphere that pervades the record. No-one does this kind of thing better.

The spirit of Tricky's '90s output looms large over False Idols. There are times when his entire career has seemed like a stubborn refusal to be defined by its success or sound. He has finally come to terms with it, even learned to embrace it. The light bulb moment came when he was sending demos to a friend. "All the songs which were easy for me to write, which I wrote in two hours, he sent me a message saying, 'This is why I loved you in the beginning.' The stuff that I'd thought about more, that stuff he was like, 'It's OK, yeah.' So then I knew. It brought me back to my natural instincts."

The resemblance to Maxinquaye is undeniable, though the material on False Idols is gentler; more mature. "Of all my records, the majority of people are into Maxinequaye," says Tricky. "That's because it was a time and a place. Maxinquaye was a part of their life. Some people say it was the soundtrack to their youth. You can't challenge that. But musically this is a better album." He pauses before adding. "Of course I know that people might not agree with that." Let's just say it's a stunning return to form and leave it at that.

Many of the songs on False Idols feature artists signed to Tricky's new label, including 24-year Londoner Francesca Belmonte and Fifi Rong. The album also includes collaborations with Nigeria's new global star Nneka, the aforementioned Peter Silberman. In the months before the album's release, False Idols will also release two EPs showcasing the label's roster on new non-album material produced by Tricky.

Why the name False Idols? "Because there's so much bollocks going on at the moment mate," Tricky fires back. "People follow celebrities and read every little thing they do. It's living vicariously through someone else. Get your own life. All this stuff is false idols. That's what helps keep the status quo." As to the label's mission, Tricky puts it thusly: "I signed to Island because of the artists and some of the stuff they've done-Bob Marley, Tom Waits. Who could I sign to now? Am I going to sign to a label because they've got Lady Gaga? I don't want to be part of that bollocks music industry. I'm trying to bring that Island kind of thing back. Obviously False Idols is never going to be an Island Records, but it's my way of trying to keep that part of the music industry going."

This commitment to the survival of artistry in new music seen Tricky collaborating with young musicians from Creep to Maya Jane Coles, popping up on Zebra Katz underground smash "Ima Read" with Gangster Boo and remixing "Crest" by Antlers.

"This new album I'll stand behind every track," Tricky says. "I don't care whether people like it. I'm doing what I want to do, which is what I did with my first record. That's what made me who I was in the beginning. If people don't like it, it don't matter to me because I'm back where I was."

"...the self-martyred confessionals, the grandiose sense of melancholy, the sweeping harmonies: It's timeless stuff." - The Onion AV Club

"The old material, including the three-minute instrumental title track, lives on to be just as punchy, pop-smart and sincere. In short: Texas Is The Reason remain as influential now as they did at the time." - Kerrang! (KKKKK)

Influential '90s New York City-based indie rock band Texas Is The Reason have announced their final shows ever. Beginning on Friday, July 26 in Aurich, Germany, the week-long tour will take in four evenings and performances in Germany, one in Spain and three in the United Kingdom, culminating in a final performance at the Electric Ballroom in London on Sunday, August 4. The upcoming week of shows follows Texas Is The Reason's recent appearance at this past weekend's Groezrock Festival in Belgium and its final, successful North American set of performances that saw the band performing in markets such as Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tickets for all of the upcoming shows will go on sale on Thursday, May 2. The band will be performing these shows in support of its latest release, the 16-track Do You Know Who You Are?: The Complete Collection
Photo: Jammi York
Released on February 12, 2013 though Revelation Records, the album is a comprehensive collection of every recorded piece of music in the band's history, featuring the original Do You Know Who You Are? full-length album, the self-titled EP, as well as two B-sides never before on CD/digital, and two previously unreleased tracks written in 1997 and recorded in 2012 with J. Robbins titled "Every Little Girl's Dream" and "When Rock 'N' Roll Was Just A Baby." The album package also includes never-before-published photos, a comprehensive concert history for the band from 1995-2012, and complete lyrics.
They came from some of the most popular, if not polarizing hardcore bands of the early '90s (Shelter, 108, Ressurection), but by the time Texas Is The Reason formed in 1994, a new aesthetic crystallized almost instantly and reduced its members' previous efforts to history. Indeed, it was only a year later when Revelation Records released the band's self-titled EP, their name derived from a lyric in the Misfits song "Bullet," that Texas Is The Reason were already headlining their own tours in America and well on their way to defining a new moment in post-punk.

In April of 1996, the band reinforced that initial success with their first and only album, produced by Jawbox's J. Robbins and named after the last words that John Lennon was alleged to have heard: "Do You Know Who You Are?" In the years since, SPIN, Alternative Press, and Paste would all go on to call Do You Know Who You Are? an essential '90s album. Unfortunately, after a year of heavy promotion and touring for the record, inner-band tension came to a head and the band officially split in 1997. Its members would go on to form Jets To Brazil, New End Original and Solea.

Since then the band had only reunited once - for two sold-out New York City shows in 2006 - but their presence has barely waned: Newer generations of bands like Spitalfield, Into It. Over It., and Transit have covered Texas Is The Reason songs over the years, and even vets such as Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and Armor For Sleep have all publicly cited their influence. So after agreeing to headline the opening night of Revelation Records' 25th Anniversary festival in New York City earlier this year (and once again promptly selling it out), the band decided it was time to tie up the longest of loose ends by releasing a remastered discography collection in 2013 featuring its entire recorded output, as well as two freshly recorded, never-before-released songs - their final songs ever.

Texas Is The Reason will be performing their final shows in Europe and UK during July and August. Tour dates below.

26 - Aurich, Germany - Omas Teich Festival
27 - Berlin, Germany - Greenville Festival
29 - Cologne, Germany - Stollwerck
30 - Wiesbaden, Germany - Schlachthof
31 - Barcelona, Spain - Estraperlo Club

02 - Glasgow, UK - Classic Grand
03 - Manchester, UK - Manchester Academy 3
04 - London, UK - Electric Ballroom - FINAL SHOW EVER

Mac DeMarco photographed by Brad Elterman

The last year has been a wild one for Mac DeMarco. After quietly releasing his debut EP Rock and Roll Night Club in March of 2012, he set to crafting 2, his first long player under his own name. The songs Mac wrote in the spring and early summer of 2012, combined with non-stop touring, undeniable charm and a reputation for raucous live shows brought the gap-toothed 22 year old from Montreal international attention - even catching the ears of Phoenix, with whom Mac just finished a West Coast US tour.

Building on the successes of 2012, Mac DeMarco is back today to share the Alex Lill-directed video for 2 highlight "My Kind Of Woman" via Nowness. Along with the video, Mac is announcing another run of North American tour dates slated for this summer, including stops at OBEY, Northside, Bonnaroo, Sled Island and Pitchfork Festivals, among others. Tessa Rose Jackson "Lost & Found"

Tessa Rose Jackson

“Lost & Found” FREE MP3 Featured on iTunes,
Streaming HERE

At only 20 years old, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Tessa Rose Jackson has already made quite a name for herself in the Netherlands, where she was born and raised. In addition to playing sold-out shows in Amsterdam, the songstress has taken over the Dutch airwaves, being put on high rotation on the largest Dutch radio station and performing live on the most popular local late night show. Influenced both by the music she grew up on (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys) and by her time at the BRIT School in London (home to fellow artists Adele & Kate Nash), Tessa Rose describes her sound as a “more accessible Feist and a slightly poppier Fleet Foxes, with a nod to Ray Lamontagne and a bit of Edward Sharpe.” Her new album, (Songs From) The Sandbox, is now available via iTunes.

Album track “Lost & Found” features Tessa Rose’s sweet but commanding vocals above swirling layers of instrumentation and handclaps, leading to a chorus rich with harmonies. You can download the “Lost & Found” FREE MP3 via iTunes or stream the track HERE, and we encourage you to post & share.

(Songs From) The Sandbox opens with the infectious “Stepping Stone,” an upbeat track with a captivating rhythm and light, airy vocals. “Change Time,” which was featured in a popular Ikea ad, is bursting with frenetic energy, both from Tessa Rose’s galloping vocals and a lively, bouncing rhythm. “405” is a slower, dreamy cut with an emotionally-charged chorus and an explosive ending.

A self-proclaimed “hippie child” who has mastered all aspects of her craft, Tessa Rose Jackson has won over audiences and critics alike with her smart and heartfelt songwriting. Stay tuned for more from Tessa Rose, coming soon!

Pere Ubu announce North American tour!

Pere Ubu announce North American tour!

Tour kicks off at Hopscotch Music Festival on September 6th!

"If Pere Ubu's '414 Seconds' were only an instrumental, it would be plenty terrifying: During these slinking seven minutes, drum hits trigger guitar cries that sound like death moans in the distance, while reeds of electronic noise slither like snakes through the din. But it's not instrumental, and both the curdled voice and the oneirological torment of frontman David Thomas only exacerbate the music's hall of horrors.
- Grayson Currin, Pitchfork

Pere Ubu returned with their first new studio album in over three years with the January release of Lady From Shanghai on Fire Records (home to Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma, Giant Sand, Bailterspace, Josephine Foster and many others). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas and band continuing to provoke and shock listeners, further establishing them as one of the most innovative, progressive and important bands of all time.
The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next 34 years they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others.
Pere Ubu make a music that is a disorienting mix of midwestern groove rock, “found” sound, analog synthesizers, falling-apart song structures and careening vocals. It is a mix that has mesmerized critics, musicians and fans for decades.

Pere Ubu Fall Tour:

09.06 • Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)
09.07 • The Earl (Atlanta, GA)
09.08 • Mercy Lounge (Nashville, TN)
09.10 • Rock And Roll Hotel (Washington, DC)
09.11 • North Star Bar (Philadelphia, PA)
09.12 • Bowery Ballroom (New York, NY)
09.13 • Fete Lounge (Providence, RI)
09.14 • Brighton Music Hall (Allston, MA)
09.15 • Higher Ground - Lounge (South Burlington, VT)
09.16 • Maverick's (Ottawa, ON)
09.17 • Le Cabaret du Mile End (Montreal, QC)
09.18 • Lee's Palace (Toronto, ON)
09.19 • Beachland Ballroom (Cleveland, OH)
09.20 • Trinosophes (Detroit, MI)
09.21 • The Empty Bottle (Chicago, IL)

Press for Lady From Shanghai:
"Pere Ubu made some of the darkest and most creative music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Thirty five years after its release, The Modern Dance would easily make my top 10 of all time. We hear the word "industrial" bandied about to describe music — The Modern Dance exemplified that genre.  Wordsmith and singer David Thomas and his ever-changing band members have made more than a dozen albums worth hearing since then. And now they're back with a new song, "Free White," from a new album, Lady From Shanghai, due in January. It's good to know that singular, defining sound still haunts this band." Bob Boilen - NPR
“Ubu are generally regarded as the missing link between the Velvets and punk. From the beginning they obviously understood the nuts and bolts of popular music, and then loosened them.” Joe Cushley – Mojo
“They’re the greatest out-rock ‘n’ roll group of this millennium, and probably the next.” Edwin Pouncey – The Wire
David Thomas
Keith Moliné – guitar
Robert Wheeler – synthesizer
Gagarin – synthesizer
Michele Temple – bass
Steve Mehlman – drums

PBS DIGITAL Studios Announce new series, Beat Making Lab

PBS DIGITAL Studios Announce new series, Beat Making Lab

new episodes air every wednesday

PBS Beat Making Lab

PBS Digital Studios is thrilled to announce a new weekly digital program called Beat Making Lab, a unique music series focused on youth in developing nations around the world.

The 20-week series made up of two to three-minute episodes, chronicles a music producer and a UNC Chapel Hill professor as they set up music studios (small enough to fit into a backpack) in The Democratic Republic of Congo, Panama, Senegal and Fiji. Each two-week workshop is designed to nurture local music talent, while providing the tools and techniques to make their own beats. All studio equipment is donated to the community after the sessions wrap up, establishing a permanent music lab for future beat-makers.

"Cho Cho Cho" is the first song and music video produced and written by the youth of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Created in a Beat Making Lab, the song was inspired by a popular call-and-response chant in Goma and the video was filmed during Yole!Africa's SKIFF Festival dance competition. Take a look at the official video HERE.

During the month of May, Beat Making Lab will partner with Global Health organization Intrahealth and Speak Up Africa to set up all-female workshops in Dakar, Senegal. These sessions will showcase the talent of seven female MCs, singers and producers who, through their music, aim to spotlight various health issues in Africa.

Beginning in June, the real-time series will feature episodes from Suva, Fiji.

Watch the premiere episode and introduction to the Beat Making Lab process HERE.
See what's inside the pair's beat-making backpack HERE.
Watch the introduction to the Panama series HERE.

Beat Making Lab will release a compilation of original youth-produced tracks in the fall. Stay tuned for more information.
