Tijuana Panthers share new video

After releasing their third album, Wayne Interest, via Innovative Leisure last month and heading out on a European tour, Tijuana Panthers are back today to share the new music video for their single, "Nobo." Next week the band starts a west coast tour with Toronto hardcore outfit Fucked Up. Since 2010 their debut, Max Baker, the Panthers have steadily become SoCal underground legends playing both packed backyard parties and sold out concert halls along the way. For their forthcoming album, Tijuana Panthers collaborated with producer Richard Swift (The Shins, Foxygen). Wayne Interest will be available on June 3rd via Innovative Leisure. Check out the "Nobo" video, the Fucked Up tour dates, more information about the album below.

About Tijuana Panthers and Wayne Interest:

Live and on record, the Tijuana Panthers are a great band. You could say garage, punk or surf while describing their sound, but they're harder to pin than that. The truth is that they write classic songs that don't depend on tropes from any genre. They craft perfect pop and deliver it with energy and immediacy. However, the real magic of this band is in their weirdness.

Behind their picturesque portraits of daily life is an aching despair. This subtle contrast creates an eerie tension between the ideal, the real and the surreal. You suddenly realize they're not the happy-go-lucky beach boys you tried to pin them as, but more akin to sexually frustrated soda jerks in a David Lynch film. And this all makes sense with the fact that they come from Southern California's shadier city of Long Beach, not exactly the fun in the sun that California dream- ers might expect.

For Wayne Interest, the Panthers team up with producer Richard Swift. The recordings took place at Swift's studio in Oregon where the band decidedly took risks in performance and production. The risks paid off. With Swift's direction and upgrade in fidelity, Wayne Interest sounds just as compelling in headphones as it would at a house party in East LA. It also gives the listener a closer look at the idiosyncrasies of the Tijuana Panthers, only making it clearer that there's something off about these creeps. Their weirdness, or bold- ness to be whoever they may be, is what makes this band great. It's a rare quality. The more you listen to the Tijuana Panthers the more you wonder about them.

Wampire announces new LP + shares first single

Wampire photo by Andy De Santis

LISTEN: "Wizard Staff" -

Following the release of their debut album Curiosity in 2013, Wampire went from a duo most accustomed to playing house parties around their hometown of Portland to a five-piece band performing in venues all over the world with groups such as Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Foxygen, and Smith Westerns.

That 12-month span saw Wampire play more shows in more cities, countries, and continents than in all their previous years together combined -- a nearly non-stop barrage of new and memorable experiences that, above all else, forced the band members to become more fully immersed in music than at any other time in their lives.

As a result, when founding members and primary songwriters Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps returned home at the tail end of the year, they immediately dove into the process of working on a new album in order to capitalize on the creative energy that had been steadily amassing during their days, weeks, and months on the road.

Says Phipps of that moment in time, "I holed up in a tiny room within a friend's warehouse and began knocking out as many different songs as I could. I tried not to look back, just wanting to explore everything I could possibly create. I started to feel like I was becoming a Kafka-esque insomniac musical novelist at one point."

The reference to the German writer is an apt one for a band that has always imbued its disarmingly off-kilter pop with tinges of paranoia and surrealism (both lyrically and musically), but even more fitting is the title of Wampire's new record: Bazaar.

Like the tantalizing blend of exotic treasures and captivating sensations its namesake suggests,Bazaar continually offers listeners a variety of unexpected and alluring sonic flavors over the course of its nine tracks -- ranging from raucous riffs ("Bad Attitude") to seductive sax ("Wizard Staff") to charmingly catchy choruses ("The Amazing Heart Attack").

As with their previous full-length Curiosity, Wampire recorded Bazaar with trusted producer Jacob Portrait (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), though this time around the sessions took place at The Museum, a studio in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood, and were done directly to tape.

Far from home once again, Tinder and Phipps used the city to their advantage -- writing lyrics on the 40-minute bus ride to and from their temporary residence in Bed-Stuy and rushing to a shop down the street to buy a guitar -- one that looked and felt like it had been buried in dust for decades and had just the right analog sound -- as their allotted studio time was winding down.

Another important change was the addition of touring drummer Thomas Hoganson to the recording and songwriting process. Though Tinder and Phipps had previously sought to minimize distractions in the studio by just working with each other, Hoganson's diverse musical abilities (in addition to drums, he also plays piano and saxophone on Bazaar) made him an ideal collaborator.

And so, after a year spent in vans and on planes, in European clubs, Australian beaches, and everywhere in between, Wampire emerged with more confidence, a stronger vision, and what is undeniably their best batch of songs to date.

For evidence of this, check out the album's first single "Wizard Staff" above now and see below for all of the band's upcoming tour dates, including a September run with Temples. Bazaar will be available on CD, LP (Polyvinyl e-store limited edition of 300 on 180-gram clear purple, black), cassette and digitally.

About Peter Matthew Bauer:

Peter Matthew Bauer is a rock & roll singer and musician with a debut record called "Liberation!" out everywhere now on Mexican Summer and Memphis Industries. It's been called a "cult classic in waiting" by UNCUT magazine and has been universally embraced in the press. As an album, Bauer uses Liberation! as an opportunity to welcome the rest of the world into his personal history of a childhood spent living in ashrams, and a life shaped by the constant presence of religion and mythology amidst uncertainty. What Peter has learned, and what he imparts both on the title track and across the eleven songs that make up Liberation!, is a riot of experiential notions. "Liberation, as the idea of the record, relates to belief in its various incarnations. In a way I'm trying to poke fun at it; this Western idea of heaven, this Eastern idea that it will take a hundred lifetimes, or a thousand lifetimes to get somewhere better. You can be mad about these things, but you can also arrive at some sort of strange, joyful experience right now without believing anything."

At whatever level you choose to listen, the record stands proudly on its own, a roundabout life story couched in a dynamic blend of soulful balladry, folk-tinged meditations, and full-bore rock & roll. Written and realized in Utrecht during a bout of insomniac wanderlust, a song like "Latin American Ficciones," the album's first single, could take on any number of interpretations, with lyrics that become more descriptively vicious by turns as its two-chord riff grows in intensity, all dimed amps and deafening mantra. The first song on the record, "I Was Born In An Ashram," addresses his teenage years, summers spent in an Ashram in upstate New York, set to a shambolic percussion, acoustic guitar, and choral background vocals, which culminate in a spiritual euphoria. "After awhile, a lot of unsavory business rose up around the ashram. So some of the songs relate to that, these whispers you'd hear as a teenager, of all these dark shadows and characters hanging around. I think it's very unusual that all this negative stuff arises, and yet, so many of these people are having these very strange, authentic spiritual experiences," Peter recalls. "That's the sort of energy I was trying to get at - that paradox, which as you investigate it more, really seems to make more and more sense. Life is jubilant and joyous even through the shadows."  Album closer "You Are The Chapel" builds off a heart-soaring piano melody, skipping across an even wider array of life lived, from conversations about Richard Dawkins and genetics with strangers in the Basque countryside, to the absurdity of lad behavior from inside the facilities at a Savages concert in Leeds, to the life of a shoeless French hippie in Barcelona.

The constant changes in scenery that inspired Peter Bauer to write this record highlight a greater truth about the songs on Liberation! - that they exist on multiple levels, they take on meanings other than their intention the moment they left the studio, joined by what he's phrased in the record's finale as "the mystery of of it all." Conceived largely on a sojourn all across Europe, Liberation! was recorded at a factory space in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia with friends Quentin Stoltzfus, Christopher Colbert, Matt Oliver, and Matthew Barrick taking part in the recording and mixing. All of this work accounts for Liberation's saturated, homemade feel, as Peter's music fuses a wide swath of influences and technique into an assured, anthemic statement in the palette of rock 'n' roll. Liberation! is the soundtrack of one man's journey inside himself, in preparation for the rest of the world to follow.

VANIISH (ex-Soft Moon & Wax Idols) unveil video for title track

(please post and share)
San Francisco's VANIISH (featuring past and present members of Wax Idols and The Soft Moon) have shared the video for the title track from their debut album, Memory Work.  The video does a great job of capturing the mood of the record and enveloping the watcher into its world of eerie soundscapes and surrealism.

Memory Work is an impressive debut that is both dense and spacious, combining the atmosphere of early 4AD with the psychedelic shoegaze of Creation Records.  Memory Work is available now on digital, CD and limited edition vinyl with an alternate cover viaMetropolis Records.

Vaniish have also announced an east coast run this fall that includes dates with White Lung. All tour dates below.

"Chills and churns in all the right ways, evoking the crystalline melancholy of The Cure's early work along with the edge-blurred atmosphere of Sarah Records' back catalog." -The AV Club

"I miss songs like this. Songs that make me feel like I'm in a cave full of noise and every echo is catered to fill the holes in my brain. A music box made just for me." -White Lung's Mish Way via Noisey

"VANIISH put all their influences on display, but they do a great job of combining them to create a pleasantly dark and distinct sound." -Impose Magazine

"VANIISH is surprising in its directness. Tecon's low, baleful voice is the perfect complement to the song's highwire guitars and eerie layers of synth." -Wondering Sound

"An album filled with frenzy, drawing you into an otherworldly atmosphere of echoing vocals and deftly layered instrumentation." -WILD Magazine
"Icy and dark in nature, with cutting vocals and bone chilling synth work. Instruments interlope and tumble together, similar to the effect of a simple twist on a kaleidoscope. There's a remarkable sense of urgency and upheaval." -The Bay Bridged

The San Francisco 4-piece VANIISH began when singer/guitarist Keven Tecon (Wax Idols, ex- The Soft Moon) left his previous bands after his mother's death in early 2013.  "I was on tour in Eastern Europe in the middle of winter when it happened and it was too much to handle.  I couldn't keep it up."  After returning home Tecon decided to focus entirely on a new project along with fellow Wax Idols member Amy Rosenoff (bass) and SF music-scene luminaries Adam Beck (guitar/keyboards) and Nick Ott (drums).  The album "Memory Work" is both dense and spacious, combining the atmosphere of early 4AD with the psychedelic shoegaze of Creation Records. It envelopes the listener into its world of eerie soundscapes and surreal lyrics.  "There is an interesting mix of synths, guitars, samples, drum machines, and live drums.  We like the idea that you can't tell what's real and what isn't."  The album was produced by Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon, Wax Idols)

The title track is the sound of machines breathing and fluids pumping, with a pulse beat overladen with brush strokes of synth.  "Kaleidoscoped" ditches the monochrome for crystallized shards of guitar and a sparkling chorus that's hard to see coming.  "Search and Replace" is vicious and would be more at home in 2080 than 1980 while the addictive melody of "Merge" is the closest the album comes to an actual pop song.  "Succession" gives the second side of the album some breathing room with it's sparse production and icy spikes of guitar.  Lush album closer "La foi au fil de l'eau", sung entirely in French, could easily find its way onto a film score.

Dum Dum Girls announce fall tour in support of 'Too True'

Dum Dum Girls announce fall North American tour in support
Too True, their critically acclaimed 3rd album

Dum Dum Girls YouTube playlist (featuring Too True videos “Lost Boys & Girls Club,” “Are You Okay,” “Rimbaud Eyes,”and “Too True To Be Good”)

Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a North American fall tour in support of Too True, their critically acclaimed 3rd album on Sub Pop. The tour begins October 19th in Denver, CO at Larimer Lounge and ends November 15th in Pioneertown, CA at Pappy & Harriets, Preceding the tour, Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a few festival appearances including Saturday August 2nd in Santa Ana, CA at the Observatory for Burger A-Go-Go,  August 9th in San Francisco, CA at Outside Lands, and September 20th in Denver, CO at Riot Fest. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.

Dum Dum Girls Too True is available now on CD/LP/DL from Sub Pop. The album lead by the singles & videos for “Lost Boys And Girls Club,” “Too True To Be Good,” “Are You Okay,” and “Under The Hands, was produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Richard Hell), Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and engineered by Alonzo Vargas at East West Studios in Los Angeles and The Coven in New York City.

What people are saying about Too True:
Dum Dum Girls continue to explore a sonic and formal intersection of the early 1960s — girl groups, surf-rock, garage-rock — and the post-punk 1980s of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. A few chords, a clear melody and succinct verse-chorus-bridge structures are filled with darkly allusive lyrics and floated amid gauzy, sweeping guitar effects. It’s a roomy concept, encompassing spaghetti western guitar touches in “Cult of Love,” new wave momentum in “Little Minx,” stately folk-rock in “Under These Hands,” a weighty undertow in “Lost Boys and Girls Club” and a celestial serenity in “Trouble Is My Name.” - [Critics Choice] New York Times
“Penny's songs are no less quotable for their simplicity, whether she's name-checking 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud ("Rimbaud Eyes"), fitting the album's title into the chorus of "Too True to Be Good" or dispensing a perfect goth-pop mission statement in "Evil Blooms": "Why be good? Be beautiful and sad." On Too True, Penny and Dum Dum Girls need barely 30 minutes to prove that a band can be all three at once.” [First Listen] - NPR Music
“.. This album is the perfect-pop balance of cliché and rawness, with mythic ambition and songs that make you a three-minute hero.” [4 / 5 Stars] - MOJO
“Sleek and sophisticated, this third full-length careens from muscular blasts of ’80s guitar rock (“In the Wake of You”) to spectral ballads (“Are You Okay?”). Penny writes hits even if they never become that. Songs like “Too True to Be Good” and “Rimbaud Eyes” are meant to be blared from car radios with the windows down; they’re perfect. - Boston Globe

“Songs like "Rimbaud Eyes" and "Evil Blooms" more than live up to their fashion-goth titles. But Penny is best opening up her sound on big, searching ballads like "Lost Boys and Girls Club," where sad Madonna hangs with the Jesus and Mary Chain, or the Chrissie Hynde-worthy weeper "Are You Okay?" where Penny wanders in a "lavender haze" ("I'm reckless at night/I'm sorry for days"), wearing boozy misery like a black-leather security blanket.” [3.5/5 Stars] - Rolling Stone
Too True is a bold album, with Dee Dee backed by huge swelling guitars on a series of resoundingly anthemic and unashamedly 80s sounding tracks.” [8 / 10] - Uncut

SWANS west coast tour 2014

Swans have commenced the fourth leg of  a year-long world-wide tour celebrating the release of their 2 CD set To Be Kind, the third studio album from this outfit since their reactivation by band primum mobile Michael Gira in 2010 after a 14 year hiatus. The touring line-up is: Michael Gira - guitar, voice (original Swans); Norman Westberg - guitar (original Swans); Christoph Hahn - guitar (mid period Swans and most Angels Of Light); Phil Puleo - drums, percussion, dulcimer etc etc (final Swans tour and most Angels); Chris Pravdica - bass and gadgets (Flux Information Sciences / Services/ Gunga Din); Thor Harris - drums, percussion, vibes, dulcimer, curios, keys, etc etc... (Angels / Shearwater).  I'm hoping you'll consider advancing this show with a feature, CD review or advance blurb.  Do let me know if you need the music.

To Be Kind was produced by Michael Gira, performed by the touring line-up,  recorded by the venerable John Congleton at Sonic Ranch, outside El Paso Texas; further recordings and mixing were accomplished at Congleton's studio in Dallas, Texas. Gira says of the new album, "A good portion of the material for this album was developed live during the Swans tours of 2012/13. Much of the music was otherwise conjured in the studio environment." The album debuted at #37 on Billboard's Top 200 sales chart and has garnered a huge amount of ecstatic coverage from a host of impressive outlets:

Swans' grand new album, "To Be Kind," is a career-defining work that few could have expected from a 30-plus-year project considered by many to be well past its peak. At 122 minutes, it's as long as a movie and as densely heavy as a Richard Serra sculpture.

Defying easy categorization, "To Be Kind" is a rock album, but it's not something to be taken lightly. Brash, polarizing, fearless and filled with a purity of vision that would make Col. Kurtz blanch, the work features mountains of guitars and beats made with boulders, brass, laser-gun noises, guest vocals from Annie Clark (a.k.a. St. Vincent) and a sprawling vision...Randall Roberts/Los Angeles Times

...To Be Kind harnesses Swans' crushing volume, pulverizing repetition and lacerating waves of feedback - all those conventionally aggro signifiers - to show us that love can be as vast and voracious as the void, and the void as welcoming as a lover's embrace. They are one and the same.... Phillip Sherbourne/Spin.com

... As it plays out, To Be Kind starts to resemble a cult procession unto itself, a mesmerizing spectacle of an omnipotent band whose sound continues to expand in scope and ranks swell in size...Stuart Berman/Pitchfork.com

Michael Gira founded the seminal NYC band Swans in 1982. Quickly infamous for their punishing, brutal and repetitive onslaughts of sound, extreme volume levels, and the self-abusing, abject shouts and growls of Gira's sloganeering vocals, Swans gradually transformed over 15 years, ultimately venturing into harsh mechanical proto-industrial rock, to sprawling shifts of texture and perspective  (see the bucolic atmospheric folk idles and martial stomps of their much heralded Children of God double LP from 1987), to gentle acoustic-based songs, and finally on to their ultimate statement, Soundtracks For The Blind (1997) which somehow incorporated all of these elements at once, across well over 2 hours of music in one album. At this point, Gira called it quits after 15 years of relentless touring and productivity, and disbanded Swans.  He went on to release his music under the name Angels Of Light on a long series of critically acclaimed albums. He also produced and released music through his label Young God Records and was responsible for finding and nurturing such notable talents as Devendra Banhart, Lisa Germano, Akron/Family, and James Blackshaw. In 2010, he reactivated Swans, releasing My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky to ecstatic critical response and touring the world for the better part of a year.  The Seer, a 2 CD set came out in 2012 and was celebrated by a year-long tour as well, both the album and live shows eliciting still more media praise, the album placing nicely on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart.
